Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and is in the same family of drugs as other acid reflux medicines such as Lansoprazole and Rabeprazole.
Do not take Esomeprazole:
1. if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Esomeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
2. If you have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine similar to Esomeprazole that reduces stomach acid talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Esomeprazole.
3. If diarrhoea occurs during the treatment with Esomeprazole contact your doctor immediately, as Esomeprazole has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhoea.
4. Taking a proton pump inhibitor like Esomeprazole, especially over a period of more than one year, may slightly increase your risk of fracture in the hip, wrist or spine. Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (which can increase the risk of osteoporosis).
5. Talk to your doctor before taking Esomeprazole if you have low vitamin B12 levels or have risk factors for low vitamin B12 levels and receive long-term treatment with Esomeprazole. As with all acid reducing agents, Esomeprazole may lead to a reduced absorption of vitamin B12.
6. This medicine may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking this medicine or while you are taking it, talk to your doctor straight away
• you lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing.
• you get stomach pain or indigestion.
• you begin to vomit food or blood.
• you pass black stools (blood-stained faeces).
Take ONE daily as directed
If symptom control has not been achieved after 4 weeks, a referral would be required for further investigations.
