How to Choose the Right Wegovy Dosage for Weight Loss?

Starting your weight loss journey and selecting the appropriate dosage of medicine can be confusing, especially when it comes to prescription-only weight loss injections like Wegovy.

Everyone has different health conditions, and so do their bodies. That is why it is important to choose the right medication dosage to ensure your health safety and the drug’s effectiveness.

This comprehensive guide aims to provide detailed insights on making an informed decision regarding Wegovy

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is an injectable prescription medication used for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related conditions. It mimics a hormone that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake.

Wegovy was introduced in the UK on September 4, 2023, after getting approved by the UK Medicines and Health products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in September 2021. Before Wegovy’s introduction, other diabetes management medications containing semaglutide, such as Ozempic had been available in the UK since January 2019.

How to Use Wegovy?

Wegovy is usually administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection, meaning it’s injected just under the skin using a needle.

You have three options for injection sites:

  • stomach
  • upper arm or
  • upper thigh

Your doctor or healthcare provider can better guide you about the correct way to inject yourself with Wegovy. You must follow their guidance strictly to get the best results. Also, it’s advised to take Wegovy at the same time every week to create a routine.

Who is Wegovy Suitable for?

Wegovy weight loss injection is suitable for adults who are either obese (with a Body Mass Index, BMI, of 30 or more) or overweight (with a BMI of 27 or more) and have at least one weight-related health issue, such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.

It’s important to note that Wegovy is meant to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. However, it’s not suitable for everyone, and its use should be based on an individual’s health conditions and in consultation with a healthcare professional like The Care Pharmacy in the UK

What is the Right Wegovy Dosage?

Wegovy Dosage Guide

Finding the suitable dosage of  Wegovy is not one-size-fits-all. it comes in five different strengths to cater to varying patient needs.

Since Wegovy is a prescription medicine for weight management, you must begin by consulting your GP or a healthcare professional.  They will assess your health status, medical history, and weight loss goals to determine which Wegovy strength suits you.

How many doses are in a Wegovy pen?

Each Wegovy strength comes in a separate pen holding 4 pre-filled doses. When you are required to switch the strength, you’ll need a new pen. The pens are color-coded, making it easy to identify the different strengths of each dose.

The Wegovy pen has different strengths to suit various needs and preferences:

Wegovy Starting Dose

Wegovy 0.25 mg is the starting dose for beginners and can be injected at any time of the day.

Escalation Doses

Wegovy 0.5 mg

Wegovy 1 mg

Wegovy 1.7 mg

Maintenance Dose

Wegovy 2.4 mg

After the first 4 weeks, you’ll increase the dosage of Wegovy – from 0.25 to 0.5mg. Then, every 4 weeks after that, you’ll increase the dose as per the schedule your healthcare provider has given you.

The maximum and usually maintenance dose of Wegovy is 2.4mg and 1.7 mg (depending on an individual’s health condition), and that starts in week 17 and continues for the rest of your weight loss journey.

Gradually increasing the Wegovy dosage helps your body get used to the medicine and lowers the chances of side effects. It might take some time before you actually see Wegovy’s effects – you’ll need several weeks to reach the standard dose that works best for managing your weight.

What Factors Can Affect Wegovy Dosage?

Several factors can influence Wegovy dosage:

1. Your Health Profile

The initial dose and subsequent adjustments depend on the your overall health. This includes pre-existing conditions like kidney or liver disease, which might necessitate a lower dose or a slower dose escalation.

2. Body Weight and BMI

As Wegovy is used for weight management, the patient’s body weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) can influence the starting dose and any adjustments needed as treatment progresses. This weight loss injection can only be prescribed to people suffering from obesity having a BMI > 28.

3. Tolerability

Individual tolerance to the medication is a key factor. Some patients may experience side effects like nausea, which could necessitate a slower increase in dosage or a temporary reduction in dose.

4. Treatment Response

The effectiveness of the medication in reducing weight and achieving treatment goals will also affect dosage decisions. The dose may be adjusted accordingly if the desired weight loss is not achieved.

5. Other Medications

Interactions with other medications the patient is taking can affect Wegovy dosage. It’s important to consider the entire medication regimen to avoid interactions that could reduce the effectiveness of Wegovy or increase the risk of side effects.

6. Guidelines and Recommendations

Healthcare providers follow clinical guidelines and recommendations when prescribing Wegovy. These guidelines consider the latest research and clinical trial data to recommend safe and effective dosing strategies.

7. Patient Compliance and Lifestyle

The patient’s ability to adhere to the prescribed regimen and their lifestyle choices, including diet and exercise, can influence the effectiveness of the medication and, consequently, the dosage adjustments.

Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate dosage for individual circumstances.

How Long it Takes to Lose Weight with Wegovy?

When you start using Wegovy, you might notice some weight loss within the first few weeks. But it’s important to remember that everyone’s experience is different. So, it’s possible that you might not witness any visible change in your weight during the first few months of treatment.

What if I Miss a Wegovy Dose?

Remember to take your Wegovy medication as your doctor has advised. It’s okay if you sometimes forget a dose.

Suppose you missed a dose and your next one is more than 48 hours away, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is due within 48 hours, don’t take the missed dose; just wait and take your next dose at the regular time.

Avoid taking two doses of Wegovy within 48 hours, as this could lead to too much medicine in your system and increase the risk of side effects.

If you forget to take your Wegovy for more than two weeks, you should either continue with your next scheduled dose or book an online consultation at The Care Pharmacy weight management clinic and talk to our experts for the best advice.

If you’re having trouble with your current Wegovy dose and it’s making you feel unwell, it’s a good idea to have a chat with your doctor or nurse.

  1. How much weight can I lose with Wegovy?

Wegovy can help you lose a lot of weight, about 15% of your body weight in a few weeks. But it’s given as an injection, which might not be right for everyone. You should talk to your doctor about which weight loss medication is best for you.

Wegovy and Ozempic aren’t suitable for everyone. Ozempic is specifically for individuals with Type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is licensed for people who are obese or overweight with additional health issues caused by their weight.
