Wegovy Pill (oral semaglutide) — now MHRA approved, coming soon to The Care Pharmacy
The Wegovy Pill is the once daily oral tablet form of semaglutide, a GLP 1 receptor agonist licensed for weight management alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. Approved by the UK’s medicines regulator in June 2026, it is the first daily GLP 1 weight loss tablet licensed in the UK, and is designed for eligible adults who want the proven results of semaglutide without injections. We are awaiting UK launch stock — join the waitlist below and we will email you the moment it is available to order.
UK status: approved by the MHRA, awaiting launch
The Wegovy Pill was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in June 2026. It is licensed for weight management in adults living with obesity (a BMI of 30 or above), or who are overweight (a BMI of 27 to under 30) with at least one weight related health condition, alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. This product is listed as Coming Soon while we await confirmed UK launch stock and pricing from the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk. Once it is available to order, this page will be updated with our pricing and prescribing criteria. The tablet is not currently available through the NHS, and any future NHS rollout will depend on an assessment by NICE, so a regulated online pharmacy service like ours is expected to be one of the first routes of access in the UK.
What is the Wegovy Pill?
The Wegovy Pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the weekly Wegovy injection, in a once daily tablet. Semaglutide is a GLP 1 receptor agonist that has been used in the UK for several years in both diabetes care and weight management. The tablet uses an absorption enhancer that protects semaglutide from stomach acid and allows it to be absorbed through the stomach lining, which is why the tablet has specific instructions about how and when to take it. For people who are put off by needles, or who simply prefer the routine of a daily tablet, it offers the established effects of semaglutide in a needle free form.
How it works
Semaglutide works by mimicking GLP 1, a natural hormone released by the gut after eating that helps regulate appetite. It acts on appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, and it slows the rate at which the stomach empties, so you feel satisfied for longer after smaller meals. The result for most people is that eating less feels easier rather than a constant battle with hunger. Like all GLP 1 medicines, it works best when combined with sustainable changes to nutrition, activity, sleep, and eating habits.
How effective is the Wegovy Pill?
The MHRA approval is based on the OASIS 4 phase 3 clinical trial, which studied the 25mg semaglutide tablet in adults living with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight related condition, who did not have diabetes. After 64 weeks, participants taking the tablet lost on average around 13.6% of their body weight, compared with around 2.4% with placebo, alongside lifestyle changes. Among participants who adhered fully to treatment, average weight loss was around 16.6% compared with around 2.7% with placebo. These results are broadly in line with what has been seen with the weekly Wegovy injection, supporting the view that the tablet offers a comparable alternative for suitable patients. Individual results vary, and weight loss medicines are a support for long term change rather than a replacement for it.
Wegovy Pill vs Wegovy injection: what is the difference?
- Same active ingredient: both contain semaglutide and work in the same way
- Frequency: the tablet is taken once every day; the injection is taken once a week
- How it is taken: the tablet must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a 30 minute wait before food, drink, or other oral medicines; the injection can be taken at any time of day, with or without food
- Needle free: the tablet involves no injections, needles, or sharps disposal
- Storage: tablets are kept in their original bottle at room temperature, with no refrigeration needed
- Results: clinical trial results for the 25mg tablet are broadly comparable to the 2.4mg weekly injection
How do you take the Wegovy Pill?
The tablet has specific instructions because food and drink can significantly reduce how much semaglutide your body absorbs. To get the full effect:
- Take one tablet first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, when you wake up
- Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of plain water (up to about 120ml) — do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve it, and do not take it with any other drink
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines
- If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time the following morning — never take two tablets in one day
- Store the tablets in their original closed bottle at room temperature, away from moisture
Dosing and strengths
The Wegovy Pill comes in four strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg. Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and is increased step by step, with a minimum of one month at each dose level, until the 25mg maintenance dose is reached as tolerated. This gradual escalation gives your body time to adjust and helps reduce side effects. People currently using the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection may be able to switch directly to the 25mg daily tablet, subject to clinical assessment by our prescriber.
Who it may be suitable for
- Adults living with obesity (BMI 30 or above), or overweight (BMI 27 to under 30) with at least one weight related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea, where a prescriber decides it is clinically appropriate
- People who want a needle free option and can commit to a consistent morning routine on an empty stomach
- People already using a GLP 1 injection who would prefer to move to a daily tablet, subject to clinical review
Who it is not suitable for
- People below the licensed BMI thresholds, or anyone seeking weight loss for cosmetic reasons
- Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- People with certain medical histories, which our prescriber will screen for during your consultation
Side effects
The most common side effects of semaglutide are gastrointestinal, such as nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, and vomiting. These are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and often settle as your body adjusts — which is one reason the dose is increased gradually. In the OASIS 4 trial, around 7% of participants stopped treatment because of side effects, similar to rates seen with the Wegovy injection. Rare but serious side effects can occur with GLP 1 medicines, and our pharmacy team will go through these with you and remain available for support throughout treatment. Always read the patient information leaflet, and contact us or your GP if you are concerned about any symptoms.
