Mounjaro in Leicester: Community Prescribing or Tier 3?

Mounjaro in Leicester

Mounjaro in Leicester: the NHS services have different roles

If you are considering Mounjaro in Leicester, it helps to know which NHS service can assess you. Community prescribing and specialist Tier 3 care follow different arrangements. A pause in new specialist referrals does not mean that every NHS weight-management option has closed. Your next step depends on which service you need.

NHS Mounjaro in Leicester: community or specialist assessment?

For NHS Mounjaro in Leicester, the community prescribing pathway is separate from specialist care. Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland also has other forms of weight-management support. “Tier 3” means specialist care for people who need a team with additional expertise; it is not another name for every NHS weight-loss prescription.

The local three-year Tier 3 pilot ended on 31 March 2026. New specialist referrals are paused while services are reviewed. That includes new referrals to independent “right to choose” providers under the local referral arrangements. The community tirzepatide arrangements are described separately in the current local NHS weight-management information.

If you have been told that a service is paused, ask which service the answer concerns. Keep any existing appointment or treatment instructions until the team responsible advises otherwise. If you already receive treatment, ask your own team how the pause affects your follow-up and keep following their prescribing advice.

Who can be considered for community prescribing?

From April 2026, the local community pathway includes adults in the first two national priority groups: four specified weight-related conditions and the relevant body mass index (BMI) threshold, broadly 35 with an ethnicity adjustment. The conditions include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, heart and blood vessel disease and obstructive sleep apnoea, in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.

Your practice needs to check your diagnoses and the full local criteria. It also decides whether it participates in the prescribing arrangement; meeting national criteria does not make a prescription available from every practice. A clinical assessment is still needed.

Ask who will assess you, who would prescribe and who provides ongoing support. Confirm how you will hear about the next appointment; eligibility criteria alone cannot give you a start date.

What the specialist pause means for your next step

If you need specialist help, ask your GP what support is available during the service review and whether your circumstances require a different referral. Explain any changes in your health, including symptoms that need assessment in their own right. Do not leave a new health problem unreported because a weight-management service is paused.

If you already have a referral or were part of the pilot, use the contact details given by your existing team. Ask about your individual follow-up rather than assuming that information for new referrals also applies to you.

A private prescription is not a way to reserve an NHS specialist place. If you choose private care, discuss the cost and follow-up responsibilities directly with that provider. Any later request for NHS prescribing will be judged against the NHS arrangements that apply at the time.

Local support while a prescribing question is resolved

Live Well Leicester provides lifestyle support for city residents. The local NHS information also signposts resources for Leicestershire and Rutland. Where you live can affect which community programme is relevant, so use the service for your own area rather than assuming that a city programme covers the whole county.

You might want help with meal planning, becoming more active or changing habits that have been hard to maintain. Explain the part you find difficult when enquiring. If advice needs to fit cultural food preferences, a disability, caring responsibilities or a tight budget, say that at the start.

Each programme has its own eligibility rules and appointment arrangements. Joining one does not mean you qualify for tirzepatide or guarantee that a clinician will prescribe it. Ask whether it can support you alongside other care you already receive.

Preparing a useful conversation about treatment

Before you contact a service, make a short note of your current situation:

  • Which service have you already spoken to, and was the answer about community prescribing or specialist referral?
  • What diagnosed conditions, medicines and recent measurements will the assessing clinician need?
  • Have you had previous supported weight-management care, and what helped or made attendance difficult?
  • If you already take a medicine privately, who provides reviews and whom do you contact about side effects?

Keep your information accurate even if you are unsure whether you meet the criteria. A clinician can explain what matters and request missing records. A local pharmacy or online service should not skip those checks because you have searched for a specific brand.

If an assessment leads to a different recommendation, ask what it involves and what happens next. The aim is a plan you can follow safely, with clear responsibility for monitoring and advice.

When weight management is linked to surgery

If you have been advised to lose weight before surgery, tell your GP and the surgical team what treatment you are awaiting. The local bariatric preparedness service has a separate role in assessing and preparing people for a possible surgery referral.

Ask which team is coordinating your care and how any weight-management advice fits with the planned procedure. Do not assume that a pause in one specialist pathway cancels every other referral, or that starting a medicine privately will satisfy a surgeon’s requirements. Those decisions need to be discussed with the teams treating you.

How a private assessment differs

Private prescribing is separate from NHS funding. A medicine may be licensed for a wider group of adults than the NHS can currently treat. For weight management, tirzepatide is licensed for adults with a starting body mass index (BMI) of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related condition.

The Care Pharmacy offers an online weight-management assessment. You provide your height, weight, medical history and medicines; a prescriber considers whether treatment is appropriate and may need further information. You complete this assessment online. Our physical branches are in Bradford; contact the team if you have questions or would prefer face-to-face care.

Before committing to private care, ask about the complete cost, follow-up arrangements, help with side effects and what happens if treatment is stopped. Check the current weight-management options for service information.

Medicine checks to discuss with a clinician

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and requires a prescription. Tell your clinician about all medicines, previous weight-management treatment, pancreatitis, severe digestive problems and any planned operation. Read the current Mounjaro patient leaflet before using it; instructions for a different injection may not apply.

Do not use it during pregnancy. If you use the contraceptive pill, discuss adding a barrier method or changing to non-oral contraception for four weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Ask your clinician before treatment if you are breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can occur. Severe, persistent stomach pain, which may spread to your back, needs urgent medical attention because it can be a sign of pancreatitis. Call 999 for breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or throat. Do not wait for a routine review. The MHRA guide to weight-management medicines explains these risks and how to avoid unregulated sellers.

Questions about local care

Has all NHS Mounjaro prescribing stopped in Leicester?

The pause concerns new Tier 3 specialist referrals. Community prescribing has separate arrangements. Ask your practice which service can assess you and whether you meet its current criteria.

Can I use right to choose to avoid the specialist pause?

The current local commissioning position also applies to new independent-provider Tier 3 referrals. Ask your GP about appropriate available support rather than assuming that a provider advertising nationally can accept your referral.

Can my GP take over a private prescription?

Only if the current NHS criteria, local arrangements and clinical assessment support that decision. Starting privately does not guarantee transfer, and your private prescriber remains responsible for the treatment they provide.

Is an online appointment a Leicester clinic visit?

You complete an online assessment remotely. The Care Pharmacy’s physical branches are in Bradford. Check the appointment type before paying or travelling.

Discuss your weight-management options

If you are considering private weight-management care, The Care Pharmacy’s online assessment lets a prescriber review your health and discuss suitable options. Any prescription depends on that assessment.
