Once daily erectile dysfunction treatment

Is tadalafil daily right for you?

Tadalafil daily is a low dose tablet for erectile dysfunction (ED). You take it once a day, at about the same time. You do not need to plan each tablet around sex. This page offers the generic medicine in 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths.

A UK prescriber reviews your health, current medicines and treatment history. They decide whether a daily plan suits you. You do not need to choose a dose on your own.

Tadalafil daily 2.5 mg or 5 mg

A daily plan may suit men who expect to have sex at least twice a week. The usual dose is 5 mg once a day, taken at about the same time each day. Your prescriber may lower this to 2.5 mg, depending on how well you tolerate it. Never increase your dose yourself.

5 mg once daily

The usual daily dose for erectile dysfunction. One tablet at about the same time every day.

2.5 mg once daily

A lower daily dose. Your prescriber may advise it if 5 mg causes side effects.

These daily strengths are different from tadalafil 10 mg and 20 mg taken when needed. The higher strengths are not intended for continuous daily use. Tell your prescriber which regimen you take now before switching. Your prescriber will also review from time to time whether daily treatment still suits you.

Daily or when needed?

Daily (2.5 mg or 5 mg)

One tablet every day at about the same time. No need to time a tablet around sex. Suits men who expect frequent sexual activity.

When needed (10 mg or 20 mg)

One tablet at least 30 minutes before sex. No more than one tablet a day. Suits less frequent sexual activity.

How daily tadalafil works

Tadalafil helps blood flow into the penis when you are sexually aroused. It does not increase sexual desire. It will not cause an erection without sexual stimulation.

Taken every day, tadalafil builds up to a steady level in your body over about five days. Take it consistently. Response varies, and treatment does not work for everyone.

If it does not help, or side effects trouble you, speak to your prescriber. Do not take extra tablets.

Generic tadalafil and branded Cialis Daily

Cialis is a brand name for tadalafil. This product contains generic tadalafil only, with its own pack prices. If you prefer the branded option, see the separate Cialis Daily product.

Generic manufacturers, tablet appearance and packaging can vary. The active ingredient and prescribed strength are what matter. Pack images are illustrative. Always read the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Tadalafil daily side effects

Common side effects include headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing and a blocked nose. Speak to a pharmacist or prescriber if they are troublesome or do not settle. Do not change your dose without advice.

Get urgent help

Stop taking tadalafil and seek immediate medical help for an erection lasting more than four hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or a severe allergic reaction. Call 999 for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty or collapse. If you have chest pain, do not take nitrates and tell the medical team when you last took tadalafil.

The leaflet supplied with your pack lists the full range of possible side effects. You can report suspected reactions through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Warnings and precautions

Daily tadalafil is a prescription-only medicine and is not suitable for everyone. Do not take it with nitrates, including GTN for angina, recreational “poppers”, or riociguat.

Do not take tadalafil if sexual activity has been advised against because of a heart condition, you have had a heart attack within 90 days or a stroke within six months, or you have certain serious heart conditions, very low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure. It is also unsuitable if you have previously lost vision because of NAION, a condition affecting blood flow to the optic nerve, or are allergic to tadalafil or a tablet ingredient.

Tell your prescriber about kidney or liver problems, blood disorders, penile changes, and all medicines or supplements. Daily treatment is not recommended with severe kidney impairment; liver disease needs individual assessment. Interactions can occur with alpha-blockers, some blood pressure medicines, antibiotics, antifungals and HIV medicines.

Do not combine tadalafil with other ED medicines without specific clinical advice. Avoid grapefruit juice and excessive alcohol. If dizzy or affected by changes in vision, do not drive. Treatment on this page is for adult men aged 18 or over.

Generic tadalafil ingredients

Each tablet contains either 2.5 mg or 5 mg of tadalafil. The other ingredients, tablet appearance and packaging depend on the generic manufacturer supplied.

Some formulations contain lactose. If you have an allergy or have been told that you cannot tolerate certain sugars, contact The Care Pharmacy before requesting treatment. Check the patient leaflet supplied with your exact product rather than relying on another manufacturer’s ingredient list.

The product images illustrate the strength and a 28-tablet pack. Larger quantities may be supplied as multiple packs, and the packaging may differ.

How to take tadalafil daily

Follow your prescription and the leaflet supplied with your tablets. Take the prescribed tablet once a day at approximately the same time, with water, with or without food. The usual daily ED dose is 5 mg; a prescriber may reduce it to 2.5 mg for tolerability.

Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours, increase the strength yourself, or add an on-demand ED tablet. Sexual stimulation is still needed. Arrange a review if treatment is not helping or you have side effects; continued daily use should be reassessed periodically.

If you miss a dose

Take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Never take two doses to make up for one you missed.

If you take too much

Contact NHS 111 for advice. Seek emergency help for serious symptoms such as chest pain, collapse or an erection lasting over four hours.

Keep your medicine out of children’s sight and reach and follow the pack’s storage instructions. For further general information, see NHS tadalafil guidance. Always use your own pack leaflet for product-specific advice.
