Mefenamic acid 500mg tablets for period pain

Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It reduces the production of prostaglandins, which contribute to pain and inflammation, including period cramps. It is a prescription medicine and may not be suitable for everyone.

Strength and pack sizes

Each tablet contains 500mg of mefenamic acid. The pack options are 28 tablets for £28 or 56 tablets (2 × 28) for £49.99. Only request the quantity prescribed for you. The 56-tablet option is for an appropriate prescribed supply, rather than an automatic repeat.

A pack does not represent a fixed course or number of menstrual cycles. Your dose and treatment duration determine how many tablets you need. The manufacturer may vary; check the leaflet supplied with your tablets for the full ingredients and instructions.

Using treatment safely

Follow your prescription and use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed. Do not take it with another NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen unless your prescriber specifically advises this. Tell the prescriber about your other medicines, allergies, stomach problems and any kidney, liver or heart conditions.

New, worsening or persistent period pain, or a change in your bleeding pattern, needs medical assessment. Seek advice if treatment is not helping rather than increasing the dose or ordering more yourself.

Read the Directions, Warnings and Side Effects sections below and the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Take the dose prescribed for you, with or after food and a glass of water. These are 500mg tablets. Do not exceed your prescribed dose or use them for longer than advised.

If you miss a dose, follow the leaflet supplied with your tablets. Do not take a double dose. If you are unsure how many tablets you need, ask your prescriber before ordering.

Each tablet contains 500mg of mefenamic acid. Other ingredients vary between manufacturers. Read the leaflet in your supplied pack for the full list, and tell the pharmacist about any allergies or intolerances before taking it.

Do not take mefenamic acid if you have had an allergic reaction to it or a reaction such as wheezing to aspirin or another NSAID. It may be unsuitable if you have stomach ulcers or bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, or serious kidney, liver or heart disease.

Tell your prescriber about all medicines you take, including blood thinners, aspirin and other painkillers. Do not use during the last three months of pregnancy. Seek advice before use at any earlier stage of pregnancy, while breastfeeding or when trying to conceive.

Stop taking it and seek urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black stools or severe stomach pain. Call 999 for difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, or chest pain.

Possible side effects include stomach discomfort, nausea, indigestion and diarrhoea. If diarrhoea develops, stop taking mefenamic acid and contact your doctor. Serious problems can include stomach bleeding and allergic reactions; see the Warnings section.

The leaflet supplied with your tablets lists other possible side effects. Speak to a pharmacist or doctor about symptoms that concern you.

Follow the storage instructions on your supplied pack and leaflet, as these can vary between manufacturers. Keep tablets in their original packaging, out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date; return unwanted medicine to a pharmacy.
